This 6x6 inch acrylic painting takes inspiration from Hokusai’s legendary Great Wave off Kanagawa—but pushes it into a new realm of tactility and shine. Thick black impasto builds the curling wave into a sculptural relief, while flashes of cobalt blue spark against a metallic gold sky. The clash of shimmer and texture makes the surface feel alive, shifting with the light as you move around it.

The idea was simple: the ocean is wild, vast, and eternal—but what if the sky burned gold instead of fading blue? That metallic counterpoint to the unruly water became the balance point of the composition. I wanted to honor the tradition while turning it maximalist—pushing the texture further, letting the wave crest with more physicality, making the surface lush and raw.

Painted on a shallow cradled wood panel, this piece blends contemporary street-art energy with traditional Japanese inspiration. It’s small in size, but it commands presence—perfect as a single statement or as part of a gallery-style grouping.
