From rooftop cocktails to dawn-lit fallout — the desert once turned annihilation into entertainment. The Blast Hat revisits Las Vegas’s atomic era, when the end of the world was close enough to dress for — and far enough away to applaud.

Sixty-five miles north of the Strip, the Nevada Test Site lit the sky more than 900 times between 1951 and 1992. From casino rooftops, locals and tourists watched mushroom clouds rise like curtain calls.
From Fremont Street rooftops and Strip hotel balconies, mushroom clouds rose like scheduled attractions. Guests checked their watches. Bartenders poured. Cameras came up.
Decades later, that glow migrated indoors — preserved on Flamingo Road at the National Atomic Testing Museum. The museum may move (renderings by CSD Architects). The impulse won't. Even annihilation, it turns out, benefits from better lighting.
Folk headed to the Desert Inn for “Atomic” breakfasts. Later at the Desert Inn Sky Room, an Atomic Cocktail waited. Remembered as Vodka, Brandy (or Cognac), a teaspoon of Sherry, and topped with Brut Champagne for the bubbles — served cold, guests clinked glasses to the flash.
It was kind of the visit's highlight. The end of the world performed in daylight, complete with silverware, sequins, and polite applause.
